Commitment across government

The Office for Disability Issues works across government, leading on development of disability policies and delivery of services, consultations and projects, and has a range of useful resources for government staff

The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) works with all government departments in promoting the vision of improving the life chances for disabled people.

The ODI works closely with departments in the development of disability policies and delivery of services. Departments remain responsible for their own disability policies.

Government departments

Six government departments are responsible for delivering the recommendations in the Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People report.

These departments are responsible for strategy and steering the work of the ODI, in line with the 20-year vision for disabled people.

The ODI shares knowledge and expertise with government departments and has a range of useful resources:

Minister for Disabled People

Jonathan Shaw is Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Commons, the Minister for Disabled People, and a minister within the Department for Work and Pensions.

The ODI works with and supports Jonathan. Some of the areas Jonathan  is responsible for are disability legislation, disability rights and independent living funds.

Ministerial Group

Through the Ministerial Group and Inter-Departmental Group on Disability, the ODI ensures departments are kept up to date with developments.

The Inter-Departmental Group on Disability has people from most central government departments and the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales.

The ODI also supports departments in making consultations and projects inclusive and in meeting their duties under the Disability Equality Duty.
