Recommendations

The Life Chances of Disabled People report sets out the government's aim on improving equality for disabled people

 

The 'Life Chances' report made recommendations around these central themes:

  • independent living through initiatives such as individual budgets. Read about the Office for Disability Issues (ODI) 's work on independent living.
  • improved support for families with young disabled children.
  • eliminating service gaps and facilitating transition between childhood and adulthood.
  • improved support and incentives for getting and staying in employment.
  • providing a more strategic focus within government.

Overall, there were 60 recommendations. The three which were prioritised were:

  • establishing the Office for Disability Issues to provide a strategic focus. Find out about the ODI.
  • setting up a national forum for organisations of disabled people, now called Equality 2025 (the United Kingdom Advisory Network on Disability Equality), to allow direct communication between disabled people and government.  Find out about Equality 2025.
