Who we are

The Office for Disability Issues takes the disability agenda forward across government by joining up policy and delivery to ensure we deliver equality for disabled people

The Prime Minister's Strategy Unit report 'Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People' identified a lack of coordination between government departments in ways policy is developed and services are delivered for disabled people.

The report recommended the Office for Disability Issues (ODI) be set up to help improve equality for disabled people.

What had been missing?

The report identified three key areas for development and improvement:

  • common goals between government departments
  • collective ownership of policies for disabled people
  • collective commitment to and delivery of the policies

There were also gaps in policies and services, and conflicts between policies in different departments. The ODI has begun to address these issues.
