More help with accessibility

 

This section tells you how to change the text font, change the text colour, change the background colour and how to remove images. These instructions are different for each browser.

If you use an Apple Mac you should visit the Apple website's section on accessibility.

Instructions for Microsoft Internet Explorer users

Changing the text font:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu (on older versions Internet Options may be on the View menu).
  • Press the Accessibility button.
  • Tick the box next to Ignore font styles specified on Web pages.
  • Press OK.
  • Press the Fonts button
  • Choose your font from the drop-down menu under Web page font.
  • Press OK.

Changing the text colour or the background colour:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu (on older versions Internet Options may be on the View menu).
  • Press the Accessibility button.
  • Tick the box for Ignore colors specified on Web pages.
  • Press OK.
  • Press the Colours button.
  • Untick the box for Use Windows colours.
    • To change the colour of the text, press the button to the right of Text, choose your colour from the palette and press OK.
    • To change the colour of the background, press the button to the right of Background, choose your colour from the palette and press OK.
  • Press OK.

Removing the images:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu (on older versions Internet Options may be on the View menu).
  • Select the Advanced tab at the top right hand corner of the box.
  • Scroll down to the Multimedia heading.
  • Untick the box next to Show Pictures.
  • Press OK.

Instructions for Firefox and Netscape Navigator users

Changing the text font:

  • Select Options from the Tools menu (on older versions you may have to select Preferences from the Edit menu).
  • Press the Fonts & Colors button in the General Options (on older versions you may have to select Fonts under the Appearance category).
  • Tick the box for Always use my Fonts (on older versions you may have to untick the box for Allow documents to use other fonts).
  • From the Proportional box select whether you would like to use a Serif or Sans Serif font. Sans serif is normally clearer.
  • Select the font from the Serif or Sans Serif box that you would like to use.
  • Press OK.

Changing the text colour or the background colour:

  • Select Options from the Tools menu (on older versions you may have to select Preferences from the Edit menu).
  • Press the Fonts & Colors button in the General Options (on older versions you may have to select Colors under the Appearance category).
  • Tick the box for Always use my Colors (on older versions you may have to check the box for Use my chosen colors...).
    • To change the colour of the text, press the button to the right of Text, choose your colour from the palette.
    • To change the colour of the background, press the button to the right of Background, choose your colour from the palette.
  • Press OK.

Removing the images:

  • Select Options from the Tools menu (on older versions you may have to select Preferences from the Edit menu).
  • Select Web Features (on older versions you may have to select Advanced).
  • Untick the box next to Load Images (on older versions Load Images may be called Automatically Load Images).
  • Press OK.

Instructions for Opera users

Changing the text font:

  • Select Preferences from the File menu.
  • Select Page Style.
  • Press Configure modes button.
  • Under Author mode tick My fonts and colors and untick Page fonts and colors.
  • Press OK.
  • Select Fonts.
  • Select Normal from the list and press Choose.
  • Press the button below Color, choose your colour from the palette and press OK.
  • You might also like to change the colour for Headings 1 to 4 as well.
  • Press OK.

Changing the text colour:

  • Select Preferences from the File menu.
  • Select Page Style.
  • Press Configure modes button.
  • Under Author mode tick My fonts and colors and untick Page fonts and colors.
  • Press OK.
  • Select Fonts.
  • Select Normal from the list and press Choose.
  • Choose the font of your choice and press OK.
  • You might also like to change the font for Headings 1 to 4 as well.
  • Press OK.

Changing the background colour:

  • Select Preferences from the File menu.
  • Select Page Style.
  • Press the button to the right of Background color, choose your colour from the palette and press OK.
  • Press OK.

Removing the images:

  • Select Preferences from the File menu.
  • Select Multimedia.
  • Select Show no images from the Images drop-down.
  • Press OK.
