Equality 2025 at the Liberty Festival
On 31 August 2008 members from Equality 2025 met with over 300 Deaf and disabled Londoners at our stall at the Liberty Festival.
What is it?
The Liberty Festival, held in the heart of London in Trafalgar Square, is organised by the Greater London Authority (GLA) in recognition of their commitment to promote equality and diversity. The event had a great atmosphere, lively crowds and, most importantly, accessible space to exhibit their skills and talents. More information about this event can be found by visiting GLA website.
Why was Equality 2025 there?
This event provided Equality 2025 with the ideal environment to raise our profile and promote our work. It proved to be a great opportunity to engage with a diverse range of Deaf and disabled Londoners with over 300 visitors to our stand.
What do you think?
We brought with us some questionnaires to find out what Deaf and disabled people think about issues that concern them.
Of the people we asked we found that
- 31% of Deaf and disabled people knew about Equality 2025.
- Deaf and disabled Londoners access information from
- the Internet (45%)
- newspaper (35%)
- Disability Now (32.5%)
- social care professionals (27.5%)
- a Centre for Independent Living (10%).
- 86% felt that disability is not sufficiently covered in the media
- 82% said they would like support with social care they got from their local authority. On the same question responders also said they would like support with getting accessible information, employment advice and information on what is available.
- There was a varied response to the question on support they would like from Disabled People's Organisation, most said they would like information, training, advocacy peer support, help with access to work and other funding opportunities.
Thank you to all those who took the time to fill in the questionnaires. We will send further news of our regional public meetings to those who have left their contact details.
