Facts about mental health and making communication accessible

 
  • Around one in six people experiences mental health problems, the most common being a mixture of anxiety and depression.
  • Many people with mental health conditions can experience high levels of anxiety when trying to get information from someone via the telephone or in using technology.

Accessible communication for people with mental health conditions

  • Helplines should be designed to support people with mental health conditions. For example, staff should receive disability equality training and learn to take account of the needs of people who may be experiencing mental distress. 
  • Online support information should be designed to be as welcoming as possible, with a high priority given to where to get human support so that people have a choice.
