Government departments spend significant amounts of time and money producing publications for the general public and other audiences.
It is important that publications are planned and prepared in a way that makes them easy to understand by as many people as possible. This will allow these publications to reach the widest possible audience in order to inform, engage and change behaviour.
To do this, it is helpful to have publications standards that draw on best practice.
Use clear print standards with a minimum font size of 12 point, so that information is easy to understand.
Provide accessible formats, such as large print and easyread on request or in advance if your target audience is mostly disabled people.
Use 16 point as a minimum for large print versions but ensure that larger sizes are available on request.
The easy access format is relatively new. It is aimed at people who have neurological impairments, such as the effects of a stroke. Consider using it as one of a range of formats for full accessibility or for particular campaigns.
