How to implement disability equality schemes

Disability Equality Schemes research and implementation by the Disability Equality Duty

On 15 March 2007, the ODI published findings of the Compliance audit report: Disability Equality Schemes with the requirement for public bodies to produce a Disability Equality Scheme. The report gives information to support the DRC's initial enforcement strategy.

To gain a better insight into the way the DED works, the ODI has commissioned research to assess how well public bodies are implementing the Disability Equality Duty (including Disability Equality Schemes and Action Plans. The research report, to be published in summer 2008, will identify best practice in implementing schemes and areas for further improvement.

The research will explore whether public bodies are correctly interpreting and implementing the legislation. It will also look at what contribution the duty has made to organisational change and improved outcomes for disabled people.

This information will be used to help inform the Secretary of State reports that key departments have to produce every three years, the first are due in December 2008.

These reports will provide a mechanism for a high-level strategic approach to be taken toward disability equality that focuses on policy sectors beyond departmental boundaries.
