How to involve disabled people

Disabled people are involved at the very heart of government and there are many ways to involve disabled people in your work

The ODI involves disabled people at the very heart of government

Involving disabled people

There are many ways to involve disabled people in your organisation's work but please bear in mind the differences between `involving' and `consulting' disabled people.

Involving disabled people means the active engagement rather than just asking disabled people to comment on work.

Equality 2025

The ODI works with Equality 2025 - a group of 23 disabled people set up to advise government on strategic issues that impact on the lives of disabled people.

Getting disabled people's views and advice on policy initiatives can help identify problems and find solutions - saving time and money in the long run.

The ODI can put you in touch with Equality 2025 or with organisations working in the disability field.

Disability Equality Duty - involve disabled people

The creation of disability equality schemes require the active involvement of disabled people. The ODI can help ensure your organisation meets legal requirements under the Disability Equality Duty. Find out more on DED schemes

More guidance on involving disabled people will be available to download from the ODI website soon.

If you are interested in finding out more or can provide examples of when involvement has been done well, then please contact the ODI.
